Why Outfit Formulas Work and How to Make Them Your Own

Styling Tips

When it comes to getting dressed, formulas aren’t about following rules they’re about understanding why something works. They give you a framework to build from while keeping your style personal and effortless.

A client recently reached out to me, feeling stuck in a style rut. She had her go-to formula a dressy top with jeans but felt like it wasn’t working for her anymore. It felt predictable, uninspired. She wanted something fresh but didn’t know where to start.

We broke it down together. That "going-out top and jeans" formula works because it balances contrast the top brings the elegance, detail, or sexiness, while the denim keeps it grounded and effortless.

But what if we flipped it?

Instead of making the top the statement piece, let the trousers do the work.

✔ Swap out denim for something with texture think silk, leather, suede, or velvet.
✔ Keep the top simple and relaxed a crisp t-shirt, a fine knit, or even a fitted tank.

This creates the same effortless balance of casual and dressy, but in a way that feels fresh and modern. A silk trouser with a fitted tee or leather trousers with a soft knit easy, polished, and ready for wherever the evening takes you.

After we refined her formula, she sent me a message later that week: “I finally feel like myself again when I get dressed!”

That’s the beauty of outfit formulas. They’re not about limiting your options they’re about giving you a structure so you can play within it, make it your own, and feel amazing in what you wear.

Try it out and let me know : what’s your go-to evening formula?
